The scriptures say:
That is, sesame is not a grain, and the cow is not an animal.

“Tilam na dhanyam” means that sesame is not a grain (dhanya). It is a Sanskrit saying which tells us that sesame is different from grains, and the cow is different from animals. This saying is used in religious and cultural contexts, where sesame is kept in a category separate from grains.

✔ Sesame is not considered a grain: In religious rituals or traditions that have rules about using grains, sesame is not counted as a grain.
✔ Different from animals too: The saying also says “pashavo na gavah”, meaning the cow is not an animal.
✔ Cultural and religious importance: This saying shows the special importance and distinct identity of these things.
