पुस्तकों के बारे में

हममें से जिन लोगों ने गुरुजी श्री रवीन्द्र शर्मा जी की बातें ख़ुद सुनी हैं, वे समझ सकते हैं कि उन्हें लिखना आसान नहीं है। उनकी बातचीत में एक ख़ास लय है, और लिखते समय उसे उसी लय के साथ रखना कठिन है। गुरुजी मूल रूप से मौखिक परंपरा के व्यक्ति रहे हैं, और ऐसे व्यक्ति की बातों को लिखने में यह मुश्किल आना स्वाभाविक है।

उनकी बातों को लिखने में दूसरी दिक्कत यह है कि उन्हें अलग-अलग विषयों में बाँटा नहीं जा सकता। गुरुजी भारतीय ग्राम-व्यवस्था और भारतीय समाज-व्यवस्था की बातें करते थे। बात करते-करते वे बड़ी सहजता से व्यवस्थाओं के अलग-अलग पहलुओं पर आते-जाते रहते थे। शिक्षा की बात होते-होते कब वह शिल्प-कला तक पहुँच जाती, कब वहाँ से स्वास्थ्य के क्षेत्र में चली जाती, और कब हमारी कलाओं और कारीगरी से होते हुए तकनीक के सभ्यता से जुड़े पहलुओं तक पहुँच जाती, पता ही नहीं चलता था। उनके इस तरह बात करने से यह तो पता चलता है कि हमारी सभ्यता और व्यवस्थाएँ एक-दूसरे से कितनी मज़बूती से जुड़ी और एक-दूसरे पर कितनी निर्भर हैं, पर इन बातों को लिखना उतना ही मुश्किल लगता है।

इन चुनौतियों को ध्यान में रखकर उनकी बातों को अलग-अलग तरह से प्रस्तुत करने के बारे में सोचा गया। एक तरीके में उनकी बातों को, ख़ासकर कुछ जगहों पर हुई लंबी बातचीत को, बिना ख़ास संपादन के, उनकी उसी लय को जितना हो सके बचाते हुए, उन्हीं की भाषा और उन्हीं के शब्दों में रखने की योजना बनी। इसी के तहत गुरुजी की दो-तीन जगहों पर हुई (तीन-चार-पाँच दिनों की) लंबी बातचीत को लिखकर “भारत कथा” नाम की इस शृंखला के रूप में लगभग ज्यों का त्यों प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है।

महात्मा गांधी की पुस्तक “हिन्द स्वराज” की सौवीं वर्षगाँठ पर 14 से 20 मई, 2009 को “सिद्ध”, मसूरी में सात दिन की गोष्ठी हुई थी। गोष्ठी के पहले दो दिन माननीय श्री सामदोंग रिनपोछे जी की बातचीत के बाद, अगले लगभग ढाई दिन “हिन्द स्वराज” और आज के समय में उसकी प्रासंगिकता पर चर्चा हुई। उसके बाद लगभग ढाई-तीन दिनों के नौ सत्रों में गुरुजी श्री रवीन्द्र शर्मा जी की बातचीत रही। बैठक में आदरणीय रिनपोछे जी के अलावा कई और विद्वान भी मौजूद थे। गुरुजी की किसी सभा में इतनी लंबी चलने वाली यह पहली बातचीत थी, इसलिए भी यह बातचीत महत्वपूर्ण है। पुस्तक-शृंखला के पहले भाग “मसूरी संवाद, 2009” में उनकी तीन दिनों की इसी बातचीत को लिखा गया है।

यह मेरा सौभाग्य था कि मैं भी गुरुजी के साथ उस गोष्ठी में पूरे समय शामिल रहा। यही वह बैठक थी, जहाँ पहली बार गुरुजी को इतने लंबे समय तक एक साथ सुनने का मौका मिला। तब तक गुरुजी से परिचय हुए मुझे लगभग सात साल हो चुके थे। पहले भी उन्हें सुनने का मौका मिला था, पर इस बार सुनने के बाद उनके साथ ज़्यादा समय बिताने, उनकी बातें समझने और लिखने का निश्चय पक्का हो गया। इसके बाद श्री पवन कुमार गुप्ता जी से इस बारे में दो-चार बार बात भी हुई, और लगभग दो साल बाद, सन् 2011 में मैं अपनी नौकरी छोड़कर पूरी तरह गुरुजी के साथ समय बिताने निकल पड़ा।

गुरुजी की बातों की इस शृंखला में उनकी दो-तीन और लंबी चर्चाओं को इसी रूप में प्रस्तुत करने की योजना है।

About the Books

Those of us who have heard Guruji Shri Ravindra Sharma Ji in person will understand that putting his words in writing is not easy. His conversation has a special rhythm, and it is hard to keep that rhythm in written form. Guruji was essentially a person of the oral tradition, and this difficulty is natural when writing down such a person’s words.

The second difficulty in writing down his talks is that they cannot be divided into separate subjects. Guruji spoke about Indian village systems and Indian social systems. While talking, he moved very easily between different aspects of these systems. A conversation about education would drift into crafts, from there into health, and then through our arts and craftsmanship into the civilisational aspects of technology, without anyone noticing. This way of talking shows how strongly our civilisation and systems are connected and how much they depend on each other, but it makes them just as hard to write down.

Keeping these challenges in mind, different ways of presenting his talks were considered. In one approach, his talks, especially his long conversations at certain places, would be presented without any special editing, keeping his rhythm as far as possible, in his own language and his own choice of words. Under this plan, Guruji’s long conversations (of three, four or five days) at two or three places have been written down and are being presented almost as they were, as this series named “Bharat Katha”.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s book “Hind Swaraj”, a seven-day seminar was held at “Siddh”, Mussoorie, from 14 to 20 May 2009. After the talks of the respected Shri Samdhong Rinpoche Ji in the first two days, the next two and a half days were spent discussing “Hind Swaraj” and its relevance today. After that, Guruji Shri Ravindra Sharma Ji spoke over nine sessions across about two and a half to three days. Many other scholars were present besides the respected Rinpoche Ji. This was the first time Guruji spoke for so long at any gathering, which also makes this conversation important. The first volume of the book series, “Mussoorie Samvad, 2009”, records these three days of his talks.

It was my good fortune to attend that seminar with Guruji for the whole time. It was at this meeting that I first got the chance to listen to Guruji for such a long stretch. By then I had known Guruji for about seven years. I had heard him before, but after listening this time, my resolve to spend more time with him, understand his words and write them down became firm. After this I spoke with Shri Pawan Kumar Gupta Ji a few times about it, and about two years later, in 2011, I left my job and set out to spend my time fully with Guruji.

In this series, there are plans to present two or three more of Guruji’s long discussions in the same format.
